4th Year Student Wins Climbing Championship



William Bosi

4th Year student, William Bosi, won the British Senior Lead Climbing Championship in Sheffield on 5 October - the youngest climber to have ever won the title.   As a result of this, he has been invited to compete as part of the Senior Great British Climbing Team at a World Cup event in Kranj, Slovenia in November.  This will be his first Senior International competition and his coach believes he will gain valuable experience from the event.    

Broughton Takes Part in Open Uni Scheme



Broughton High School is now a participant in the Young Applicants in Schools Scheme (YASS) in recognition of S6 students taking courses with The Open University.  Further information is here

Broughton Student wins 2nd place in Martyn Bennett competition


6th year Broughton student, Rob Taylor, came second in The Martyn Bennett Prize for traditional music composition event at the Queen's Hall on 14 October.  The other competitors were all adults and professional musicians.  Rob won £1000.

Produced by The Queen’s Hall and the Traditional Music Forum, the Martyn Bennett Prize is a compositional prize for new work that takes its inspiration from Scottish traditional music. Named in honour of the acclaimed composer/multi instrumentalist Martyn Bennett, and supported by funding from Creative Scotland, applications are open to all composers and musicians aged 16+ based in Scotland whose work and practice evidences the influence of Scottish traditional music.

Recognition of Specialist Dancers


The PrincipalGeorgia Combe Officer of Creative Learning (Performing Arts) from The City of Edinburgh Council, Lucy Vaughan, invited two of our Specialist Dance pupils to perform at the Long Service Awards at City Chambers on 8 October.  

Chloe McClean (S4) and Georgia Combe (S2, pictured left)) performed a Highland piece. A wonderful recognition of our talented pupils!

Music Department Student plays at Linklea Festival

The Music department is pleased to announce that S6 pupil Freddie Pretorius, played a 45 min slot on Saturday 6 September at the 10th Anniversary of the Linklea Festival  on the Sarita stage, Coulston Estate, Haddington, East Lothian.   Linklea is a non-profit organisation and monies raised will be used to support orphans in India.

Success for former pupil in Paris


Joe EvansFormer pupil, Joe Evans, who left Broughton High School 12 years ago, is about to launch an exhibition in Paris.  Joe, whose Highers included English (taught by Mr Cairns), and Art, was Editor of the then school magazine, The High, and was also in the school Wind Band.  He currently lives in Paris with his wife, and they are expecting a baby in May 2014.

Work Experience Success for 4th year student

 Recently, 4th year student, Reuben Gourlay completed his work experience placement with a computer games design company, Lucky Frame.

It was a self-found placement and he had to design a computer game before they would even take him on for work experience which isn’t the norm.   

It’s testament to his drive to work in a niche and competitive area that they took him and were so impressed with him that they wrote about their experience.

Erin Moonie Stars at the Festival Theatre

A massive congratulations must go to our Second Year pupil Erin Moonie who was chosen to play the part of Susan Waverley in White Christmas at the Festival Theatre. The part Erin played (the General's Granddaughter) is a highly sought after role and Erin did fantastically well to gain it.

Erin showed great determination and commitment as she had to travel to London for rehearsals! Well done Erin, we are all sure that this won't be the last time we hear about you!

A YOUNG harp player is hoping to wow celebrity judges on the new series of The Voice with a mesmerising performance, the Evening News can reveal.

Music School Student premieres work by Welsh Composer in Greyfriars Kirk

Harmony 701 x 544Music School student, Harmony Rose Bremner sang beautifully on Saturday night, (9 Nov 2013) in Greyfriars Kirk in the premiere of Paul Mealor's piece The Farthest Shore.  Read the whole story here:   
The composer, who shot to fame in 2011 when his motet, a setting of Ubi Caritas et Amor, was premiered at the Royal Wedding of HRH Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton, told Harmony after the performance that hers was the best rendition of it he has heard.

William Wins Award at Commonwealth Games Dinner

3rd year pupil, William Bosi, was awarded a Scottish Sports Aid Trust Merit Award at the Commonwealth Games Dinner in Glasgow on Saturday, 9 November 2013.  At the dinner it was announced that he had won the Miquel Trophy for most improved young Scottish Sportsperson 2013.   He was presented with the trophy by Sir Chris Hoy.

Former Pupil, Sean Mill, Scoops Tomorrow's People Award

At an Awards dinner on Thursday 24 October, former Broughton High School pupil Sean Mill was awarded the overall Scottish winner of Tomorrow’s People, a charity which supports young people overcome barriers to learning.  He has done remarkably well and now is taking part on a modern apprentice programme with APS.   

Sean has also agreed to come into school to speak to some of our youngsters whose school careers are not going so well at the moment.   Hopefully his story will be an inspiration.

Broughton Student Takes Gold


6th year student, David Hand, won Gold at the 2013 Scottish Open TaeKwonDo Championships held at the weekend. He now holds the title Men's Light Weight Scottish Champion. This was his first competition since moving into the adult division. He also competed in the Men's Black Belt Tag Team event and won Silver.  


Niamh selected for Scotland

Niamh McNulty, S2, has been selected to represent her country!  Later this month Niamh will be performing for Scotland at the Tae Kwon Do European Championships in Slovenia. This is a superb achievement for Niamh, and we all wish her the best of luck at the tournament.  

Book Group Patrick Ness

The Book group were very chuffed to receive some free books by Patrick Ness from World Book Night giver Eleanor Pender.   Millions of books were being given out for free across the country.

Isla Ratcliff

Isla Ratcliff has won the Amnesty International Songwriting competition!
