Context
There are approximately 150 students from S1-S6 who follow specialist programmes of study at Broughton High School in Dance, Football or Music. In keeping with the principles and values of Curriculum for Excellence, students study Level 3 and 4 experiences and outcomes across all the curricular areas. In order to provide the time to allow for a specialist curriculum however, students are extracted from some classes. This predominantly affects years 1-3 of the broad, general education.
Specialists and the Broad General Education
Dance and Football
Students study in all curriculum areas over the 3 years of the BGE and have a minimum of 6 periods in their chosen specialist subject. Some of this time will be taken from core PE and Interdisciplinary learning. In addition, another 2 periods is required.
Music
Music specialists have approximately 12 periods of specialist music. This means that they will miss lessons across a range of subjects. Extraction from classes is arranged in consultation with staff, students and their parents.
The Broad General Education S1- S3
Dance
In S1 and S2, students study a minimum of 6 periods of Dance including Jazz, Contemporary and Ballet. Additional dance classes and workshops take place after school on Tuesdays and on Friday afternoons.
In S3 students study Dance for 6 periods within the curriculum, and are expected to take part in additional classes and workshops after school.
Dance specialists choose a total of ten subjects in S3 including Dance, English and Maths. They do not take core PE but they may choose to study a PE elective.
Football
In S1 and S2 students study a total of 8 periods of football, 6 in curriculum time, and 2 periods on Friday afternoons. In S3 students study Football as one of their subject choices for 6 periods in curriculum time and 2 periods after school. Footballers choose 10 subjects including Football, English and Maths. They do not take core PE but they may choose a PE elective. In addition, Edinburgh College Partnership allows the footballers to study 2 units towards a BTEC qualification in sports leadership.
Music
In S1 and S2 students study a minimum of 12 periods of specialist music. In S3 Specialist Musicians choose 8 subjects including Music, English and Maths.

In S4 dancers choose 7 subjects including Dance, English and Maths.
The other 4 subjects are from any curricular areas.
Dancers are presented for SQA Higher Dance at the end of S4.
In S4 Specialist Musicians choose 6 subjects including Music, English and Maths. The 3 other subjects can be from any curricular area. Specialist musicians are presented for SQA Higher music at the end of S4.
In S4 there is no specialist football programme. It is expected that students will follow PE at National 5 level.
S5 and S6
Dancers can progress to study HNC or AH Dance in S5 and S6.
Musicians study AH and an advanced academic music course linked to the various conservatoires.
