Course Information
Courses
In S1 to S3
Health and Food Technology courses cover ‘Experiences and Outcomes’ in both ‘Health and Wellbeing’ and ‘Technology’.
S1
Pupils study this course for a double period for half the year.
This is a very practical course with pupils taking part in practical food work every week.
There are three units of work:
- Licence to Cook
- The Eat Well Plate
- Design and Make a Pizza
S2
In S2 pupils take part in Health and Food Technology for a double period each week.
Units of the course are:-
- Nutrition
- Design and make a meal for differing people, e.g. Toddlers, Athletes and Vegetarians
- Design and Make a Biscuit
- Dietary Targets - making healthy food choices
- Vegetarian Cookery
S3 Broad General Education: Level 4 Curriculum for Excellence
The department offers three differentcourses which lead to National subjects in S4:-
- Health and Food Technology
- Hospitality
- Fashion and Textile Technology
Each course is studied for a double period each week. Pupils may choose two of these three subjects
S4 National Courses
Hospitality National 3-4
This is a very practical food course with emphasis on practical skills development

- Cookery Skills, Techniques and Processes
- Understanding and Using Ingredients
- Organisational Skills for Cooking
- Added Value Unit: Producing a Meal
Health and Food Technology National 4-5
Units of the course:-
- Food for Health
- Food Product Development
- Contemporary Food Issues
- Added Value Unit - Produce a Food Product (National 4)
- Assignment (National 5) - marked by SQA
Fashion and Textile Technology National 4-5
Units of the course:-
- Textile Technologies
- Fasion/Textile Item Development
- Fashion and Textile Choices
- Added Value Unit (National 4)
- Practical Activity (National 5)
The 2014 briefs for the practical activity:-
- Produce a fashion/textile itme for a child to encourage learning
- Produce a decorative fashion/textile item which includes the use of recycled textiles
- Produce a fancy dress/textile item for a teenager
