We are delighted to share that Anja Ross, one of our S5 Spanish students, has been recognised in this year’s Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, organised by the University of Oxford. Competing at Level 4, her translation was awarded a Commendation.
This is a fantastic achievement: over 22,000 students across the UK took part in the competition in 2025, and almost 5,000 entries were judged. The standard was extremely high, with judges commenting on how difficult it was to choose winners and commendations.

For the competition, students were asked to translate a literary text from Spanish into English, carefully capturing not only the meaning but also the tone, style, and creativity of the original. This required real linguistic skill and sensitivity to both languages.
We are especially proud that Broughton High School was the only state school in Edinburgh to receive a commendation in this prestigious competition, making this recognition all the more impressive. We are already looking forward to supporting our students in next year’s entries.
