Parental FAQs

Pupils MUST arrive in school by 8.30am for registration.

Lunchtime is from 1.05 – 1.50pm.

School finishes at 3.30pm Monday to Thursday and 12.15pm on Fridays.

Our dress code is designed to make life easy for parents and young people alike. It consists of:

  • White/black shirt or blouse
  • Red school tie
  • Black trousers/skirt
  • Black cardigan or jumper
  • Black shoes
  • Blazer – optional. Students in any year group can wear a blazer, which should be black. We recommend polyester, which is easily washed. Students who buy blazers can come to the School Office and receive a school badge to iron/stitch on.

All items above are not gender specific.

Leggings, leisurewear, shorts, and joggers are not permissible.

Pupils eligible for Free School Meal entitlement are also eligible for a £150 clothing and footwear grant. Please contact your child’s PSL (Pupil Support Leader) if you would like any support or advice regarding uniform.

Parents or carers should phone the school absence line on 0131 332 3106 on the first day of their child’s absence.

Upon return to school absent pupils should bring a signed note of explanation which mentions the days on which they have been absent. This should be handed to their registration tutor on the morning of their return to school.

School lunches can be paid for online through Parent Pay.    The school will provide you with login details. The website also lets you see what your child has ordered, and you can set up a low-balance alert.

Pupils are given a PIN code to use at the tills – one till also accepts cash payment. Pupils can also top up their lunch account at machines in the hub, using coins only.

Pupil Support Leaders (PSLs) were formerly known as Guidance Teachers.

They are the first point of contact if you wish to speak to someone about your child, whether it’s about their progress or any other concerns you may have.

Pupil Support Leaders deliver the PSE programme (Personal & Social Education), getting to know the students under their care and are there to provide support to students and their families on a range of issues.

Pupil Support Leaders also support the ‘child planning process.’ The child planning process includes an assessment of need which supports the school to access additional resources from external agencies. Pupil Support Leaders work alongside other support agencies and with Support for Learning daily to ensure that young people receive the support required.

The first point of contact is your child’s Pupil Support Leader (Guidance Teacher) – please see above for more information on this role.

If you need to speak to the Pupil Support Leader urgently then you can telephone the school on 0131 332 7805.

If you wish to discuss your child’s progress or raise any questions or concerns, then the best way to contact them is to email admin@broughton.edin.sch.uk and mark the email for the attention of the Pupil Support Leader that supports your child. Please also include their full name and registration class within the email.

Parents’ Evenings can either be in person in school or online.

The focus of reporting is to support and improve learning. It aims to provide clear, positive, and constructive feedback to pupils, and parents/carers about learning and progress.

Reporting should create an agenda for discussions between learners and those supporting them (teachers, other staff, and parents) about the next steps in their learning.

Assessment evidence is used to provide a report of progress at key points in the year.

Reporting in the BGE – S1/2/3 receive three tracking reports over the course of the year. The reports provide information relating to progress in learning, behaviour, effort, and homework along with two suggested next steps. The language of reporting is in line with the CEC Assessment and Moderation Framework, as follows:

        Working in the Level: a few of the experiences and outcomes achieved.

P          Progressing in the Level: around half of the appropriate range of experiences and outcomes achieved.

Reporting in the Senior Phase – 4/5/6 receive three tracking reports over the course of the year.  The basic report provides information relating to progress in learning, behaviour, effort, and homework along with two suggested next steps.  As the year progresses the reports vary slightly and share information relevant to the time of year, such as prelim grades and recommended next level of study.

Pupils from S1-S6 will receive 3 tracking reports per year.

Adam, Napier, Raeburn, and Scott are the 4 different houses here at Broughton High School.

Each pupil will be assigned a registration class during transition and will be placed within a house and will be in this house from S1-S6. Pupils will be linked to a PSL (Pupil Support Leader) and a Head of House to support your child throughout their time at Broughton. There will be a calendar of house events taking place throughout the year to encourage participation, healthy competition and to promote a sense of belonging.

Lockers are leased to students, subject to availability, for the duration of their time at Broughton. £10 is payable on collection of a locker key and £5 repaid on return of the locker key at the end of their time at Broughton providing the locker is empty, clean, and undamaged.

Lost keys will result in the £5 being forfeited and the same procedure will begin again if another locker is required. A sheet with “Locker Rules” should be read and signed before a locker is given. Disciplinary action shall be taken against graffiti or vandalism. Lockers may only be accessed during breaks, i.e. interval/lunchtime/after school.
