What time does the school day start and end?
Pupils MUST arrive in school by 8.30am for registration.
Lunchtime is from 1.05 – 1.50pm.
School finishes at 3.30pm Monday to Thursday and 12.15pm on Fridays.

How do I report a pupil’s absence from school?
Parents or carers should phone the school absence line on 0131 332 7805, select Option 1 on the first day of their child’s absence. Alternatively, you can email bro-attendance@ea.edin.sch.uk
Upon return to school absent pupils should bring a signed note of explanation which mentions the days on which they have been absent. This should be handed to their registration tutor on the morning of their return to school.
If you need to request an absence due to exceptional circumstances for a pupil, please complete and return the Absence Request form to admin@broughton.edin.sch.uk

How do pupils pay for school lunch?
School lunches can be paid for online through Parent Pay. The school will provide you with login details. The website also lets you see what your child has ordered, and you can set up a low-balance alert.
Pupils are given a PIN code to use at the tills – one till also accepts cash payment. Pupils can also top up their lunch account at machines in the hub, using coins only.

What does a Pupil Support Leader do?
Pupil Support Leaders (PSLs) were formerly known as Guidance Teachers.
They are the first point of contact if you wish to speak to someone about your child, whether it’s about their progress or any other concerns you may have.
Pupil Support Leaders deliver the PSE programme (Personal & Social Education), getting to know the students under their care and are there to provide support to students and their families on a range of issues.
Pupil Support Leaders also support the ‘child planning process.’ The child planning process includes an assessment of need which supports the school to access additional resources from external agencies. Pupil Support Leaders work alongside other support agencies and with Support for Learning daily to ensure that young people receive the support required.
If I want to talk to the school about my child, who should I contact?
The first point of contact is your child’s Pupil Support Leader (Guidance Teacher) – please see above for more information on this role.
If you need to speak to the Pupil Support Leader urgently then you can telephone the school on 0131 332 7805.
If you wish to discuss your child’s progress or raise any questions or concerns, then the best way to contact them is to email admin@broughton.edin.sch.uk and mark the email for the attention of the Pupil Support Leader that supports your child. Please also include their full name and registration class within the email.

What are the school's Houses?
In August 2025 we introduced a 5th House so we now have Adam, Napier, Raeburn, Scott and our newest House, Thorne in S1 and S2. S3-S6 continue with 4 Houses.
All young people are allocated to a House when they join Broughton in S1, or enrol at a later time, and generally remain in this House until they leave school. Each House is led by one of the Pupil Support Leaders (PSL) and linked to a Depute Head Teacher (DHT) as Head of House. The House Team ensure that we get it right for every child and provide appropriate support. Pupils attend Registration and PSE in their House classes and engage in a range of House events each year to build relationships, promote a sense of belonging and encourage participation in wider achievement.
Does the school provide a locker for pupils?
Lockers are leased to students, subject to availability, for the duration of their time at Broughton. £10 is payable on collection of a locker key and £5 repaid on return of the locker key at the end of their time at Broughton providing the locker is empty, clean, and undamaged.
Lost keys will result in the £5 being forfeited and the same procedure will begin again if another locker is required. A sheet with “Locker Rules” should be read and signed before a locker is given. Disciplinary action shall be taken against graffiti or vandalism. Lockers may only be accessed during breaks, i.e. interval/lunchtime/after school.
