The Higher qualification in Biology give learners an understanding of cell biology, genetics and growth. It covers major concepts that make biology an important area of investigative science. The course gives an understanding of the way in which biological principles can be applied to the modern world. Learners will gain insight into the importance of biochemistry, molecular biology and environmental issues, including in genetic engineering, immunology and population studies. The course concentrates on the principles underlying these key topics. Learners' problem solving and experimental skills will be challenged and developed by the course.

The Advanced Higher qualification in Biology offers in-depth understanding of the complex workings of cells and the inter-relationships within the environment. In addition, there are optional topics covering biotechnology, animal behaviour and physiology. The course also gives the opportunity for independent, investigative study. Learners will gain a sophisticated understanding of biology as well as sophisticated analytical skills. They will be able to source information from experimental, observational or survey work, write in a scientific manner and back up their arguments with evidence.
